Mane Brushes, Tail Brushes, and Mane Combs

To care for your horse’s mane and tail, it is best to use a mane brush or tail brush. Some models resemble a hairbrush and allow you to comb through the mane and tail easily. Brushes with bristles are similar to root brushes and groom the mane more gently and superficially. With this type of mane brush, you are less likely to pull out hairs, although it may not separate the strands as neatly.

A wide-toothed mane comb can also help detangle long hair. The mane and tail should look well groomed but are quite sensitive. Tail hairs in particular take a long time to grow, so you should be especially careful when grooming the mane and tail.

The tail is best detangled after a gentle wash with a mild shampoo. Mane and tail sprays help make the hair easier to comb and prevent it from tangling again too quickly. When using a tail brush, work carefully and comb through small sections of hair at a time.

With regular care, your horse’s long hair will soon be easy to brush and will also have a beautiful shine.
